The South African Literary Journal Ltd company launched Contrast magazine in the summer of 1960. It merged with Upstream in 1990 to become New Contrast. The journal has always been published quarterly, or, should I say, intended to be. It enjoys a special relationship with the University of Cape Town.
Jack Cope was the first editor. The current editor is Hugh Hodge.
The first issue contained fiction, poetry and articles by, among others, Nadine Gordimer, Jan Rabie, Richard Rive, Etienne Leroux, Ruth Miller, Uys Krige, Anthony Delius, Ingrid Jonker, TA Farnsworth and Neville Dubow.
The list of contributors to the journal since then has been a long and illustrious one. We hope it will lengthen and sparkle into the future.
Submissions to New Contrast may be sent email or post. Emailed Microsoft Word documents are preferred.
Send any kind of writing in any of the South African languages. Artwork, covers and illustrations are also welcome.
